PROBABLY NO LONGER AVAILABLE.Must be located: North America.

    SUMMARY

We are hiring a senior-level UI Engineer to work on our product team. This engineer will work closely with our mobile engineers to make decisions about when to build native interfaces vs. using web views (we currently use Turbolinks).

Ideally, this person would also guide ongoing development of our budding design system.

    ---

    EXPERIENCE

It’s not the years, it’s the mileage.

Ideal candidates will have worked on consumer-facing applications serving thousands of users, and for long enough to have encountered meaningful successes and failures. Whether that’s happened over 12 years or 12 months, it’s the mileage that matters.

For the most part, Zaarly engineers are generalists – ready and able to solve problems up and down our tech stack. While a Senior UI Engineer will focus on front end code, they should also be able to commit production-level code to any part of our app.

Working with a small team of very talented engineers, designers and operators, you’ll play an important role building an incredibly unique, local marketplace. We’re a small company and a tight-knit team working on problems no other business has solved – everyone on the team is mission-critical.

  • G2i inc
PROBABLY NO LONGER AVAILABLE.Must be located: North America.

    What is G2i?

G2i is a hiring platform for engineers ran by engineers. We match technically vetted engineers to pre-vetted clients who place a high value on engineering and focus on running healthy projects. We take care of contracts, billing, payments and all of the other work that goes into freelancing so that engineers can focus on code and clients on building their product. Our vision is for the hiring process to be simple, trustworthy and enjoyable for both companies and engineers.

When we vet clients we make sure they:

    • Prioritize communication
    • Plan appropriately and have realistic timelines
    • Understand the cost of healthy development and have a budget to pay for it

When we vet engineers we make sure:

    • Engineers vet other engineers
    • Our code challenges are to the point and based on production-level code, no whiteboarding
    • Our process is objective, repeatable and quantitively scored
    • Our process is transparent

G2i is short for "Good News to the Internet." We are convinced that our primary vision & mission are good news to companies that need to hire engineers. While we are going about fulfilling that primary vision & mission, we will also be good news to those in need. We are on mission to help hundreds of street kids in Nairobi, Kenya obtain education, a safe home, parental care, and the love they need. We are also committed to supporting the open source community by finding ways to financially support those who build the OSS we rely on.

Who we want to hire (Qualifications)

In simple terms we want to hire an engineer that is excited about building applications in React Native, is comfortable working in dynamic engineering environments and has strong communication and documentation skills. Here is what this actually means to us:

    • You have 3+ years of professional development experience and have at least 1 year of React Native and/or React production experience.
    • You have React Native code samples you can share OR are willing to complete a 6-8 hour code challenge.
    • You live in North America, South America or Europe.
    • You are fluent in both verbal and written English and are comfortable communicating directly with technical and non-technical clients.
    • You are available 30-40 hours per week.
    • You have full-stack experience with either Rails or Node.js. Apollo Client/GraphQL experience a huge plus.
    • You have experience in native Android (Java, Kotlin) or iOS (Objective C, Swift). Although to be honest, this is just a nice to have.
    • You have prior experience as a freelancer or are someone that enjoys having the freedom to choose the types of projects that best align with your interests.
    • You will have a sense of urgency to your work meaning that the completion of a task is important to you.
    • You are flexible and can adjust to the working styles of different teams. Some teams may want to pair-program and have daily interaction others may want engineers to work independently and only interact a few hours per week.

    ===

    Who you will work with

We only work with companies that value engineers and run healthy engineering teams. We regularly partner with Y Combinator funded product companies that place a high value on engineering. Some of the companies we have worked with are: Lattice, Major League Soccer, ZeeMee, Software Engineering Daily, Truebill.

You will also work with the following members of the G2i internal team:

Rhona Pierce is one of the members of our Hiring Team and the person that wrote this job description. She focuses on engineer hiring, onboarding, and matching engineers to client projects. She is a former database developer turned project/product manager who is passionate about building diverse, high performing teams for G2i's clients.

Chris Severns is the Hiring Team Lead. He focuses on engineer hiring, the technical vetting process and client fulfillment. He is an engineer that started working in Rails and picked up React, React Native, Node and GraphQL while working at G2i. He is relentlessly focused on providing quality engineers to G2i's clients and will do whatever it takes to fulfill that mission. He likes to contribute to G2i's internal tools when he has the time to get into the code.

Stephen Mitchell works in Growth. Stephen's background is in sales and marketing, but he's the type of person who will accomplish anything you throw at him. He works on our inbound/outbound sales strategies and is relentless about finding product market fit. He's also experienced in the G2i engineer hiring process and can do full cycle sales with our clients.

    The rest of the pitch

    • We work in React, Node & GraphQL and are looking forward to ReasonML. We like to stay on the bleeding edge when possible.
    • We are a remote first organization and support the remote ecosystem.
    • We take care of contracts, billing, payments and all of the other work that goes into freelancing so that you can focus on code. After we have agreed on an hourly rate we will pay you this rate every 2 weeks, as simple as that.

    The Anti-Pitch

We work hard and make our best effort to have a steady flow of work for our engineers, but as is normal with contract freelancing, there can be short periods between projects where an engineer will not have a project and will not have income. If you are uncomfortable with this then we are probably not for you.

    Diversity

G2i is an equal opportunity employer. We’re dedicated to building a team where diversity in both ideas and identities is not only welcomed, but encouraged. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, marital status, citizenship, national origin, genetic information, or any other characteristic protected by law.

If you are a minority that is considering applying, but you have any reservations about doing so, please email me ([email protected]) and let me know how we can be more welcoming to you.

  • Catapult
PROBABLY NO LONGER AVAILABLE.Must be located: United States of America.

Before you start reading, keep in mind that the aim of this job ad is to give you a feel for what it’s like to work at Catapult. There’s lots of research that suggests people often don’t apply because of so-called “requirements” in a job description. If you’re an experienced React engineer with some commercial experience in either Ruby on Rails or Elixir + Phoenix, we’d like to hear from you!

What you’re getting yourself in for

Our mission is to build the world’s best part time job. We spend our time thinking about how to give a global workforce complete control of their own work life while automating the hundreds of thousands of man hours which would normally be required to manage people on this scale.

We do this using React & Typescript on the frontend backed up by GraphQL servers, some written in Ruby and Rails and some in Elixir and Phoenix.

Businesses ranging from the largest high-street retailers to five star hotels and independent coffee boutiques rely on Catapult as their casual workforce. If you’ve spent time in a large UK city, you’ve probably been served by a Catapult waiter or sales assistant without even realising it!

We’re well funded by some amazing investors, our product is live in over 100 locations across the UK and we’ve recently launched in Berlin making us the first and only pan-european player in this space.

Our company values https://writing.joincatapult.com/our-values/ are really important to us and influence every facet of how we work together.

Things we’ve been working on recently

No two days are ever the same in a startup, but to give you a flavour of what we’ve been up to recently:

    • Standardising on React, Typescript and GraphQL across our suite of applications

    • Using Kubernetes to automatically deploy standalone environments for our feature branches, complete with anonymised production data

    • Applying machine learning to the billions of data points we generate each year to completely obsolete the interview process

    • Preparing the entire Rails, Phoenix, React and React Native environment for Globalization

    About the role

We’ve been growing rapidly over the last three years and as we continue our international roll out, we’re looking for ambitious engineers to help us build the future of work. Our engineering principles https://writing.joincatapult.com/engineering-principles/ give a good feel for how we work together and what we value.

We’re a distributed, remote first engineering organisation with team members in Prague, Warsaw, London, Bristol and Bangkok. We work in autonomous pods, each of which has ownership of one area of our business. We’re open to remote applicants from anywhere within the EU.

    About You

    • Your real passion is for the front end, finding ways to deliver innovative, polished user experiences and you’re experienced supporting this by working in either Ruby & Rails or Elixir & Phoenix backend

    • You’re excited about the potential technologies like GraphQL and Typescript have to speed up and improve the process of building complex client side applications

    • You really buy into the importance of getting things into the hands of a user quickly and then iterating

    • You actively think about when to incur technical debt and when to pay it back

    • You like to explore new technologies and have a keen eye for when something new can add real business value

    • You’ve probably spent most of your time over the last few years focussed on building React applications

    • You’re in favour of, but pragmatic about, automated testing. You like all production grade code to have good test coverage but understand when it may make sense to test MVP’s with a lower degree of test coverage

    • Bonus points for experience with Typescript / GraphQL

    What you’ll get

As well as being a part of a well funded startup at one of the most exciting phases of it’s growth, you’ll get:

    • Competitive salary + stock options + 25 days paid holiday per year

    • A strong approach to professional development and mentorship, everyone has a dedicated L&D budget for books, training and the like

    • Regular social events & the opportunity to travel to our other offices

    • Company Macbook Pro which you’re free to take home

    • A flexible work environment focussed on output not hours

We currently have a production React Native application in iOS and are now ready to deploy the Android version. The entire application (because it’s React Native) is already ready to go minus the native component piece that we’ve built in Swift; now all that is needed is the same component but for Android. The component will use a camera view as well as the gyroscope and will emit events to the React layer when the device is not flat.

We are looking for someone with the following qualifications:

    • Excellent skills in building out an Android application and has deployed apps before
    • Great communication and can work remotely without being micro-managed
    • Ability to see the big picture of a project
    • Can learn on the job
    • Ability to work with other developers as you will be working with a front-end developer to get this piece integrated into the project

The following skills are nice-to-haves but not critical:

    • You’ve worked with React Native and built out native components for Android before
    • You are based in the US (EST, CST or PST) time zones.

The project will get started ASAP and would probably only last a few weeks as there is only 1 component that is needed.

If you are interested, please let me know you’re available start time, hourly rate and send over any examples of work and be prepared to hop on a hangout and chat code!
