  • Bellroy
Must be located: United States of America.

    IN A NUTSHELL

Help us make better decisions by getting our (many) data pipelines flowing smoothly and sensibly into a well-architected warehouse. Bellroy loves to balance art with science; using data to inform and test our theories, and iterating towards Truth.

We need your help to build, improve and maintain the infrastructure required to extract, transform, load and enrich data from a variety of sources. With your help we’ll be able to get the right info, infer useful things and make better decisions. Then test, and keep improving.

When the warehouse is fully functional, you’ll lend your sharp logic to improve internal processes, automate systems, and optimise, well, everything. And down the track we’d love you to get involved with some Bayesian analysis, machine learning and other interesting data team projects.

If you get excited by the idea of providing the right data to inform great decisions; and you want that data to be accessible, understandable and trustworthy, then this could be the job for you. If you bring your experience, smarts and detail-oriented brain to help us, we’ll offer a world-class team to learn from, the tools you need to do your thing, and the support you need to flourish.

YOU COULD BE THE ONE, IF…

Your logic and reasoning is formidable, as is your determination. You are ordered and decisive, yet creative at the same time. You like things to end up fitting neatly in the boxes; but you don’t mind looking outside of them in the first place to find the answers. You get a kick out of getting things right, and you have the patience to do that every time. Because you present your work with pride, knowing you’ve done all you can to make sure it’s correct – and useful.

Disorder makes you uncomfortable. With well ordered data in a clean schema, life is good. But you love a challenge more than most other things, so where you see inconsistency or confusion, you also see an opportunity. And you’ll follow that thread until you’re confident you’ve sorted it out.

You might have been called a “bookworm” more than once in your life, because your curiosity has you forever seeking (and absorbing) information. And nowadays, this natural thirst for knowledge has you constantly looking at ways to improve, optimize and enhance – yourself, your processes, and your data. A bit like a mechanic will with a car, you’ll break apart the whole into pieces you can check and analyse, before rebuilding an idea, process or system into something better.

Sound familiar? If so, we’d love to meet you (and that brain of yours).

IF YOU WERE HERE IN THE FEW LAST WEEKS YOU MIGHT HAVE:

    • Reviewed our overall data systems (supported by very competent sysadmins) to make sure everything was in order and to look for larger scale improvements
    • Built out a handful of new pipelines to bring more of our core business data into our data warehouse
    • Chased a handful of data validation alerts raised by our pipelines, and taken the time to get to the root cause of each of them, then either delegated the fix to an appropriate someone else or fixed them yourself
    • Suggested an improvement to our A/B testing infrastructure
    • Worked outside of data team, with our developers, flexing your database and query optimisation skills to decide whether to fix a performance issue they’re having at the database level, or insist that the fix should be in the code (and, that’s fun - they’re an excellent bunch)
    • Provided an ad-hoc analysis (working with our analysts) to someone who requested it, integrating a one-off data source
    • Talked with our CIO about some of our mid-term plans, and how we’ll support them with data

THESE ARE SOME QUALITIES YOU MUST POSSESS

    • At least three years experience in data-related roles
    • Advanced working knowledge of SQL and experience in ETL using a workflow management tool such as Apache Airflow
    • Experience with building and optimising data pipelines
    • Experience with collecting data from a variety of sources including APIs (good APIs, bad APIs, and ugly APIs)
    • Strong analytical skills and an ability to perform root cause analysis
    • Training in Computer Science, Statistics, Informatics, Information Systems or another relevant quantitative field (or demonstrable skill in one of those areas and the story of how you built that skill without formal training)
    • Very high precision – you need to know how to verify that your work is correct
    • Bonus points for more experience with relevant programming languages (ie. Ruby on RAILS, Python, R, Scala), PostgreSQL, project management and machine learning.

    More about WalletHub

WalletHub is a high-growth fintech company based in Washington, DC that is looking for talented, hard-working individuals to help us reshape personal finance. More specifically, we are harnessing the power of data analytics and artificial intelligence to build the brain of a smart financial advisor, whose services we’re offering to everyone for free. The WalletHub brain enables users to make better financial decisions in a fraction of the time with three unique features:

    1) Customized Credit-Improvement Tips: WalletHub identifies improvement opportunities and guides you through the necessary corrections.

    2) Personalized Money-Saving Advice: WalletHub’s savings brain constantly scours the market for load-lightening opportunities, bringing you only the best deals.

    3) Wallet Surveillance: Personal finance isn’t as scary with 24/7 credit monitoring providing backup, notifying you of important credit-report changes.

In addition to the valuable intelligence the brain provides, WalletHub is the first and only service to offer free credit scores and full credit reports that are updated on a daily basis absent of user interaction, rather than weekly or monthly and only when a user logs in. Some other services hang their hats on free credit scores and reports, yet they’re still inferior to what WalletHub considers minor pieces to a much larger puzzle.

    How to Apply

To get our attention, all you need to do is send us a resume. If we believe that you will be a good match, we'll contact you to arrange the next steps. You can apply directly on Stackoverflow or email your application to [email protected]

    2. We give you a technical project (in Go) that you can work on at your own pace, over a week or weekend. It typically takes 3-4 hours. It's not a puzzle, riddle, or intended to trip you up. There are a few interesting ways to approach it--we primarily want to understand how you think through challenges and the quality and organization of your code.

    3. We go through your coding project together so we can all get comfortable giving and responding to feedback and support.

    Up for a challenge?

  • Simon Data
PROBABLY NO LONGER AVAILABLE.Preferred timezone: UTC -9 to UTC -1

    ABOUT US

Simon Data was founded in 2015 by a team of successful serial entrepreneurs. We're a data-first marketing platform startup, and we approach our work seriously; we tackle problems in a scrappy and disruptive fashion, yet we build for scale to support our clients at big data volume.

We are the first and only enterprise customer data platform with a fully-integrated marketing cloud. Moving beyond the limitations of both categories, Simon’s platform empowers businesses to leverage enterprise-scale big data and machine learning to power customer communications in any channel. Simon’s unique approach allows brands to develop incredible personalization capabilities without needing to build and maintain massive bespoke data infrastructure.

Our culture is rooted in organizational transparency, empowering individuals, and an attitude of getting things done. If you want to be a valuable contributor on a team that cultivates these core values we would love to hear from you.

    THE ROLE

As a Machine Learning Engineer at Simon, you will be responsible for building and optimizing smart systems that drive revenue—our statistical models are at the core of our product, and will only become more so as we continue to develop and add features. We take an approach to ML that is data-first, and requires principled modeling decisions: we don’t believe in theory-crafting models before we have collected the data that will power them, as well as built out the business process that will continue to generate that data. In the model building process, we prioritize interpretable models whose training and performance yield insights about the underlying process, along with optimizing the selected objective. Finally, we believe that Don Knuth is more right about machine-learning models than anything else when he said premature optimization is the root of all evil. We only fix what needs fixing, but we fix it right.

    WHAT YOU’LL DO

    • Architect and implement the infrastructure used by Simon’s data scientists to analyze and model client data
    • Own the productionalization and performance of the statistical models deployed into Simon’s predictive products
    • Add new features to Simon’s industry-leading marketing cloud that enable adoption of predictive models
    • Coordinate feature launches between cross-functional parts of the business
    • Mentor our less senior staff and help them raise the bar technically and professionally
    • Collaborate with an engineering team who is passionate about quality, staying ahead of the curve, and teamwork.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Minimum of 3-5 years of production-level software engineering experience
    • Broad knowledge of machine learning models (and their performance characteristics) for classification and regression tasks
    • Experience in at least one statistical coding environment (numpy/pandas, R, etc.)
    • Fluency in SQL
    • Specific experience designing and building machine-learning models
    • Front-end development experience, especially in React/Redux applications is a plus
    • Expertise in causal inference, experiment design, reinforcement learning, and related fields is a plus
    • Excellent communication of statistical concepts to expert & non-expert audiences

Visa sponsorship for this role is currently not available

    Diversity

We’re proud to be an equal opportunity employer open to all qualified applicants regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity or expression, Veteran status, or any other legally protected status.

    SENIOR SOFTWARE ENGINEER

    Full-time • Starts May 2019 • Competitive Pay • Excellent Benefits

Work from Anywhere in the U.S.

    About MoveOn’s Systems

MoveOn’s millions of members generate site traffic that would make most startups jealous. We have terabytes of data that drive ambitious analytics, fundraising, and engagement programs. At MoveOn, making decisions with data is a core part of how all work gets done. Like many nonprofit tech teams, we're a small, scrappy team, wear many hats, and work across the software stack.

While we often split up who is working on which projects, everyone on the team works on all parts of our systems. We have ~10 production systems—and two systems running at significant scale—getting thousands of requests a minute during spikes of member energy. We believe in choosing the best language, platform, and tool for the job and are not language zealots, but we also recognize the switching cost of straddling too many languages.

We do a lot of work in Python and Javascript and deploy most systems to AWS (check out our GitHub) but believe good programmers don’t need to come in with an exact match of experience and can learn our systems and software stacks. We are deeply collaborative and spend lots of time pair-programming over Zoom video. We have a “no stupid questions” policy and encourage egoless collaboration. We build and maintain infrastructure that powers the organization and amplifies the work of the analytics and mobile teams. We’ve created software management processes based on Agile that let us work in a flexible, all-remote environment and empower us to embed with organizers and work on tight political deadlines.

    Responsibilities:

    • Write code and lead projects that span the entire software stack, including prototyping, front-end development, API development, high-performance back-end applications, database design, and system architecture.

    • Debug, analyze, and resolve scaling problems across a variety of web applications, with tactics such as architecture simplification, adding caching layers or queues.

    • Create and contribute to open-source projects that share MoveOn’s innovations back with the larger developer community.

    • Contribute to system architecture and build-vs.-buy decisions and make hard decisions about complexity.

    • Contribute to team discussions on building an equitable working environment.

    • Come up with ideas for new, innovative distributed organizing applications.

    • Learn, grow, and succeed in your career.

Note: “Senior” doesn’t = a particular number of years. We understand everyone gets to a senior engineer level at different rates and through different experiences. The skills list below is intended to encapsulate what it would take to be successful in a senior engineering role at MoveOn.

    Required skills and experience:

    • Currently fluent in at least one programming language and web development platform, with significant prior development experience in at least two programming languages.

    • Experience carrying a > sixmonth-long project over the finish line.

    • Experience debugging and resolving a major production problem.

    • Proven ability to fearlessly tackle complexity.

    • Interest in technical leadership and in building a software engineering environment where everyone can thrive.

    • Passionate about mentoring and coaching other engineers.

    • Interested in learning and diving into new languages, tools, and frameworks.

    • Experience on both front-end and back-end development and the interactions between the two, including HTTP, CORS, and CDN caching.

    • Experience scaling applications with caching and troubleshooting bottlenecks at the database and application layers.

    • Determined and thorough—can see a project through from idea to prototyping, design, production, scaling, and beyond.

    • Familiar with agile software development methodologies.

    • Ability to be effective in an organization whose staff all work remotely.

Location: Position may be based anywhere in the continental United States.

Classification, Salary, and Benefits: Full-time, competitive salary including benefits such as 100% employer-paid medical, dental, vision, and life insurance for all staff and their children, 4 weeks accrued paid vacation time per year, 10 days accrued paid sick time, and reimbursement of office expenses.
